This is a set of five papier-mâché daruma dolls that nest inside one another, from the smallest — no bigger than a fingertip — to a figure that fits comfortably in the palm of the hand. The concept is simple and quietly delightful: open the largest daruma and you find a smaller one waiting inside, and so on, until you reach the tiniest form at the centre.
The daruma has been part of Japanese life for centuries, not merely as decoration but as a presence in the home — placed at the entrance, set on a shelf, given at the start of a new endeavour. Papier-mâché (harikoshi, 張り子) is the traditional material: layers of washi paper built up by hand, light to hold yet surprisingly resilient. Each piece in this set is made individually, and the slight variation that comes with handwork is very much part of its character.
The five dolls are painted in the colours of Go-Shiki (五色), the ancient five-colour system rooted in Chinese Yin-Yang Five Element philosophy. Each colour carries its own meaning — not as decoration, but as intention.

Blue (青) — Jōkon 定根, “steadfast roots”
The strength to live on with a clear, untroubled mind, no matter what arises. Rootedness in the face of change.
Yellow (黄) — Kongō 金剛, “diamond strength”
A rich and resolute nature — abundant yet unshakeable, as enduring as a diamond.
Red (赤) — Shōjin 精進, “tireless devotion”
A compassionate heart that never stops working to help and ease the lives of others. Ceaseless, wholehearted effort.
White (白) — Seijō 清浄, “purity”
A pure heart that clears away wrongdoing and the weight of earthly anxieties. Clarity and fresh beginning.
Black (黒) — Ninniku 忍辱, “patient endurance”
The quiet strength to endure insult, hardship, and temptation without being moved to anger. Dignity held in stillness.
A note on the design
The largest daruma sits on a small zabuton cushion base. The two are held together by a discreet magnet embedded in the washi paper of the cushion — so the doll rests naturally in place without any visible fastening. The nesting action is smooth and satisfying, and the whole set packs back into its gift box cleanly.
Because each piece is made by hand, there will always be small differences in line, colour, and form between individual sets. We consider this a quality of the work, not a deviation from it.
