Wood and Washi Circle Earrings – Gold Kikkō Pattern
These earrings embody a quiet sense of celebration through refined detail and traditional symbolism.
Each 3 cm wooden circle is covered with black Japanese washi, delicately printed in gold using a traditional stencil technique. Countless fine dots come together to form an intricate pattern, creating a surface that feels subtle, precise, and deeply artisanal.
The design is based on kikkō (hexagonal) patterning, inspired by the shell of a tortoise—long regarded in Japan as a symbol of longevity and stability.
Within each hexagon, different traditional motifs are carefully arranged, each carrying its own meaning:
- Ume (plum blossom): resilience, renewal, and hope, as it blooms even in the cold of winter
- Shippō (interlocking circles): harmony, connection, and the continuity of relationships
- Sayagata (continuous geometric lines): infinity, growth, and enduring prosperity
On the reverse side, sayagata and floral kikkō motifs continue this theme of quiet continuity.
Together, these patterns form a composition that is auspicious without being overt—
a design that conveys wishes for a long, harmonious, and steadily unfolding life.
Unlike more decorative or bold expressions, this washi reveals its beauty through restraint. The gold is delicate rather than dominant, and the true richness of the piece emerges when seen up close.
The washi is coated for protection and is naturally water-resistant, making it suitable even on rainy days.
Lightweight and comfortable, with an understated yet meaningful presence.
Please note: due to the dark base color, the design may appear more subtle when worn with dark hair.
